Philippe Gaubert was a French composer, conductor, and teacher of classical music. He was born on 3 July 1879 in Cahors, France. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where he won first prizes in flute, harmony, and composition. He was principal flutist of the Paris Opera from 1900 to 1925, and was appointed professor of flute at the Conservatoire in 1911. Gaubert composed works for orchestra, chamber music, and solo instruments, including a flute sonata, a flute concerto, and a symphonic poem. He also wrote several operas, ballets, and incidental music for the theater. He was a prolific conductor, and was the director of the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire from 1925 to 1934. Gaubert was a major influence on the development of French music in the early 20th century. He was a mentor to many of the leading French composers of the time, including Maurice Ravel, Darius Milhaud, and Francis Poulenc. He was also a major advocate for the music of Claude Debussy. Gaubert died on 8 August 1941 in Paris.
