Phyllis Gotlieb is a Canadian novelist and poet. She was born on May 25, 1926 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She is best known for her science fiction novels, which often explore themes of identity, alienation, and the search for meaning in a universe that is often hostile and incomprehensible. Gotlieb studied at the University of Toronto, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947. She then went on to pursue a Master of Arts degree in English literature at the same university, which she completed in 1949. Gotlieb's first novel, Sunburst, was published in 1964. It was followed by a number of other science fiction novels, including A Judgment of Dragons (1965), Mindworlds (1985), and Flesh and Gold (1986). She has also written poetry, short stories, and non-fiction works. Gotlieb has won numerous awards for her work, including the Aurora Award for Best Long-Form Work in English in 1985, the Prix Aurora Award for Best Novel in English in 1986, and the World Fantasy Award for Best Novel in 1987.
