Pierre Capretz was a French educator and author who is best known for creating the French language learning program, French in Action. He was born on 30 January 1925 in Mazamet, France. He studied at the University of Toulouse and the Sorbonne in Paris. Capretz was a professor of French at Yale University from 1965 to 1991. He was the founder and director of the Yale French Language Institute, which he established in 1967. He was also the author of several books on French language and culture, including French in Action: A Beginning Course in Language and Culture, which was first published in 1982. Capretz was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur in 1988 and the Ordre des Palmes Académiques in 1991. He died on 28 April 2014 in New Haven, Connecticut, at the age of 89.
