Pierre Schaeffer was a French composer, music theorist, and pioneer of musique concrète, a form of electroacoustic music. He was born on August 14, 1910 in Nancy, France. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris and the École Normale de Musique de Paris. Schaeffer is best known for his work in musique concrète, which he began in 1948. He developed a system of sound manipulation that allowed him to create music from everyday sounds. He also wrote several books on the subject, including Traité des objets musicaux (1966) and Écoute (1977). Schaeffer's work has been influential in the development of electronic music, and he has been credited with being the first to use the term "musique concrète". He was also a prolific composer, writing over 200 works, including the opera Orphée 53 (1953). Schaeffer was awarded the Grand Prix National de Musique in 1975 and the Grand Prix de la Musique Symphonique in 1977. He died on August 19, 1995 in Paris, France.
