Piho Rua is a Cook Islands politician who has served as the Prime Minister of the Cook Islands since November 2020. He was born in Avarua, Rarotonga, and is the son of the late Sir Terepai Maoate, who was Prime Minister of the Cook Islands from 1978 to 1983. Rua was educated at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and a Master of Arts degree in International Relations. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Auckland. Rua began his political career in the Cook Islands in the late 1980s, when he was elected to the House of Ariki. He was subsequently elected to the Parliament of the Cook Islands in 1999, and served as Minister of Finance from 2002 to 2004. He was re-elected to Parliament in 2006, and served as Minister of Finance and Economic Management from 2008 to 2010. Rua is married to Teremoana Rua, and they have two children.
