Poul Nyrup Rasmussen is a Danish politician who served as Prime Minister of Denmark from 1993 to 2001. He was the leader of the Social Democrats from 1992 to 2002 and was a Member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009. Rasmussen was born in Esbjerg, Denmark, on 15 June 1943. He studied economics at the University of Copenhagen, graduating in 1969. He then worked as a journalist and editor for the Danish newspaper Politiken from 1969 to 1972. Rasmussen entered politics in 1973, when he was elected to the Folketing (the Danish Parliament) as a member of the Social Democrats. He served as Minister of Economic Affairs from 1987 to 1992, and as Minister of Finance from 1988 to 1992. In 1992, Rasmussen was elected leader of the Social Democrats, and in 1993 he became Prime Minister of Denmark. He served in this role until 2001, when he was succeeded by Anders Fogh Rasmussen. Rasmussen was a Member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2009. He is currently the chairman of the board of the European Council on Foreign Relations. Rasmussen is married to Hanne Reintoft, and they have two children.
