Prekshya Shah is a Nepalese politician and former Prime Minister of Nepal. She was the first female Prime Minister of Nepal and the first female head of government in South Asia. She served as Prime Minister from 11 April, 1996 to 15 July, 1997. Prekshya Shah was born in Kathmandu, Nepal to a middle-class family. She completed her schooling from Padma Kanya Campus and went on to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Tribhuvan University. She then went on to pursue a Master's degree in Political Science from the same university. Prekshya Shah began her political career in the early 1980s when she joined the Nepali Congress Party. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 1991 and was appointed as the Minister of State for Women and Social Welfare in the same year. She was then appointed as the Minister of Education in 1994. In 1996, Prekshya Shah was appointed as the Prime Minister of Nepal. During her tenure, she focused on improving the country's infrastructure, education, and health care. She also worked to improve the status of women in Nepal. She was the first female Prime Minister of Nepal and the first female head of government in South Asia. Prekshya Shah is currently a member of the Central Working Committee of the Nepali Congress Party. She is also a member of the International Women's Forum and the International Women's Commission. She is also a member of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. Prekshya Shah is married to former Prime Minister of Nepal, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai. They have two children, a son and a daughter.
