R. Crosby Kemper Jr. is an American banker and philanthropist. He is the chairman of the board of UMB Financial Corporation and the chairman of the board of trustees of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. He is also a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Kemper was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on February 22, 1927. He is the son of R. Crosby Kemper Sr. and Mary Louise (née Crosby) Kemper. He attended the University of Kansas, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1949. Kemper began his career in banking in 1949, when he joined the United Missouri Bank of Kansas City. He was appointed president of the bank in 1965 and chairman of the board in 1969. In 1972, he was appointed chairman of the board of UMB Financial Corporation, the holding company for United Missouri Bank. He served as chairman of the board of UMB Financial Corporation until his retirement in 2002. Kemper is a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and a trustee of the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kansas City Symphony. Kemper has been honored with numerous awards, including the Kansas City Business Hall of Fame, the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce's Civic Leadership Award, and the University of Kansas Alumni Association's Distinguished Service Citation.
