Rabah Bitat was a prominent Algerian politician who served as the Prime Minister of Algeria from 1979 to 1984. He was born in Aïn Kerma Constantine, Algeria, on 19 December 1925. Bitat studied law at the University of Algiers and was a member of the National Liberation Front (FLN) during the Algerian War of Independence. After the war, he was appointed Minister of Justice in 1962 and Minister of the Interior in 1965. He was also a member of the National Assembly from 1967 to 1979. In 1979, Bitat was appointed Prime Minister of Algeria and served in that position until 1984. During his tenure, he implemented a number of economic reforms and oversaw the country's transition to a market economy. He also worked to improve relations with other countries, particularly France. After leaving office, Bitat remained active in politics and was a member of the National Consultative Council from 1989 to 1992. He died on 28 April 2020 at the age of 94.
