He then attended the University of North Carolina School of Law and graduated with a law degree in 1951. Yelton was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1969 to 1974. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He was also a member of the North Carolina Senate from 1975 to 1978. Yelton was a member of the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1979 to 1984. He was appointed to the court by Governor Jim Hunt. He was the first African American to serve on the court. Yelton is currently 89 years old. He is married to his wife, Mary Yelton.
