Rama Sithanen is a Mauritian economist and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Mauritius from 1995 to 2000. He was born on 21 April 1954 in Mauritius. He is the son of the late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first Prime Minister of Mauritius. Sithanen graduated from the University of Mauritius in 1976 with a degree in economics. He then went on to pursue a master's degree in economics at the University of London. After completing his studies, he returned to Mauritius and worked as a lecturer at the University of Mauritius. In 1982, Sithanen was appointed as the Minister of Finance and Economic Development in the government of Prime Minister Anerood Jugnauth. He held this position until 1995, when he was appointed as the Prime Minister of Mauritius. During his tenure as Prime Minister, Sithanen implemented a number of economic reforms, including the introduction of a Value Added Tax (VAT) and the liberalization of the financial sector. In 2000, Sithanen resigned as Prime Minister and was succeeded by Anerood Jugnauth. Since then, he has served as a Member of Parliament and as the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He is currently the leader of the Mauritian Labour Party. As of 2021, Rama Sithanen's net worth is estimated to be around $10 million.
