He began his career as a stuntman in the 1950s, and worked on films such as The Guns of Navarone and The Ipcress File. He then moved into directing, and directed episodes of The Avengers, The Professionals, and The New Avengers. Austin has also directed episodes of Doctor Who, The Sweeney, and The Bill. He has also directed episodes of the television series The Professionals, The New Avengers, and The Bill. Austin has been married twice, and has two children. He currently resides in London.
