Raymond Barre was a French politician and economist who served as Prime Minister of France from 1976 to 1981. He was a member of the Radical Party and was a strong advocate of European integration. He was also a professor at the University of Lyon and a member of the French Academy of Sciences. Barre was born in Saint-Denis, Reunion, France, on 12 April 1924. He studied at the University of Paris and the University of Lyon, where he earned a doctorate in economics. He began his career as an economist in the French Ministry of Finance in 1951. In 1976, Barre was appointed Prime Minister of France by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. He served in this position until 1981. During his tenure, he implemented a number of economic reforms, including the introduction of a value-added tax and the liberalization of the French economy. He also supported the European Monetary System and the European Union. Barre was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour in 1981. He died on 25 August 2007 in Paris, France.
