He attended the University of Miami, where he earned a degree in English and Creative Writing. After college, he moved to Los Angeles and began working in the entertainment industry. Thompson has written and directed for a number of television series, including The Wire, The Shield, The Unit, and The Good Wife. He has also written and directed for the films The Great Debaters and The Taking of Pelham 123. Thompson is currently working on a new television series, The Red Line, which is set to premiere in 2019. He is also developing a feature film, The Last Days of Summer.
