Richard Davis is an American jazz bassist, composer, and arranger. He is best known for his work with Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, and Herbie Hancock. He has also worked with many other jazz greats, including John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Thelonious Monk. Davis was born in Chicago, Illinois, and began playing the bass at the age of 12. He studied music at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and the American Conservatory of Music. He began his professional career in the early 1950s, playing with local jazz groups. In the 1960s, Davis moved to New York City and began working with some of the most influential jazz musicians of the time. He worked with Miles Davis on the classic albums Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain, and with Charles Mingus on The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. He also worked with Herbie Hancock on the albums Maiden Voyage and Speak Like a Child. Davis has also composed and arranged music for television and film, including the theme song for the television show Taxi. He has also released several solo albums, including the critically acclaimed album Round Midnight. Davis has been honored with numerous awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist for his work on the album Maiden Voyage.
