Richard Gilbert West was born on 31 May, 1926 in India. He was an Indian Army officer who served in the British Indian Army during World War II. He was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross. West was educated at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1945. He served in the Burma Campaign and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his actions in the Battle of Meiktila. He was also awarded the Military Cross for his actions in the Battle of Imphal. West retired from the Indian Army in 1962 and settled in England. He was a member of the Royal British Legion and the Burma Star Association. West was married to his wife, Margaret, for over 60 years. He had two sons and two daughters. West died on 28 April, 2021 at the age of 94.
