Richard P. Binzel is an American planetary scientist and professor of planetary sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is best known for his work on the physical characterization of asteroids and comets, and for his contributions to the understanding of the origin and evolution of the Solar System. Binzel was born in 1958 in Washington Court House, Ohio. He received his B.S. in physics from the University of Notre Dame in 1980 and his Ph.D. in planetary science from the University of Arizona in 1985. Binzel has been a professor of planetary sciences at MIT since 1985. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received numerous awards, including the Gerard P. Kuiper Prize from the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society, the Harold C. Urey Prize from the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society, and the Harold Masursky Award from the American Astronomical Society. As of 2021, Richard P. Binzel was on the "Planet Definition Committee" that developed the proposal to the International Astronomical Union's meeting in Prague in 2006 on whether Pluto should be considered a planet. Their proposal was revised during the meeting and Pluto is now considered a dwarf planet. However, Richard Binzel has strong feelings contrary to this collective decision and would prefer for Pluto to still be classified as having full planet status.

Binzel was awarded the H. C. Urey Prize by the American Astronomical Society in 1991. He also was awarded a "MacVicar Faculty Fellowship" for teaching excellence at MIT in 1994. He is a co-investigator on the OSIRIS-REx mission.
