Richard Poirier was an American literary critic, author, and professor. He was born on 9 September 1925 in Massachusetts. He was the son of a French-Canadian father and an Irish-American mother. He attended Harvard University, where he earned his B.A. in 1947 and his Ph.D. in 1952. Poirier was a professor of English at Rutgers University from 1956 to 1991. He was the author of several books, including A World Elsewhere: The Place of Style in American Literature (1966), The Performing Self: Compositions and Decompositions in the Languages of Contemporary Life (1971), and Raritan: A Quarterly Review (1987). He was also the editor of several anthologies, including The Raritan Reader (1987) and The Oxford Book of American Literary Anecdotes (1989). Poirier was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Philosophical Society. He was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism in 1988. He died on 28 April 2009 at the age of 83. At the time of his death, Richard Poirier had an estimated net worth of $2 million.
