Richard T. Drinnon is an American activist and author. He was born on January 4, 1925, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is best known for his work in the civil rights movement and his writings on Native American history. Drinnon attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1947. He then attended the University of Chicago, where he earned a master's degree in history in 1949. Drinnon was a leader in the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and served as its first executive secretary. He was also a leader in the American Indian Movement (AIM) and was a key figure in the occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1969. Drinnon has written several books on Native American history, including Facing West: The Metaphysics of Indian-Hating and Empire-Building (1980) and Keeper of Concentration Camps: Dillon S. Myer and American Racism (1987). He has also written extensively on the civil rights movement and the history of the United States. Drinnon is currently retired and lives in Minneapolis. He is 98 years old.
