Richard Waring (writer) was an English playwright, novelist, and screenwriter. He was born in London, England, on 26 June 1925. He was educated at the University of Oxford, where he studied English literature. Waring wrote several plays, including The Long and the Short and the Tall (1958), which was adapted into a film in 1961. He also wrote the novel The Big Wave (1962), which was adapted into a film in 1965. He wrote the screenplay for the film The L-Shaped Room (1962), which was nominated for an Academy Award. Waring's other works include the play The Hostage (1962), the novel The Big Wave (1962), and the screenplay for the film The L-Shaped Room (1962). He also wrote the screenplay for the film The Pumpkin Eater (1964). Waring died on 28 April 1994 in London, England, at the age of 68.

Waring was the author of numerous domestic sitcoms from the early 1960s, he worked for both the BBC and ITV. His first success was Marriage Lines (1961–66) with Richard Briers and Prunella Scales. In Not in Front of the Children (1967–70), Wendy Craig's dizzy housewife made her first appearance. Waring created ...And Mother Makes Three (1971–73), and its sequel ...And Mother Makes Five (1974–76), also featuring Craig in a similar role, but he did not write all of the episodes. Other series written by Waring include My Wife Next Door (created by Brian Clemens, 1972), Miss Jones and Son (1977–78) and Rings on Their Fingers (1978–80).
