Rick Allen is a British musician, actor, and composer best known as the drummer of the heavy metal band Def Leppard. He was born on November 1, 1963 in Sheffield, England. He is 58 years old. Allen began playing drums at the age of 12 and joined Def Leppard in 1978 at the age of 15. He has been the band's drummer ever since. He is known for his unique style of drumming, which combines traditional rock drumming with electronic percussion. Allen has also composed music for films, television, and video games. He has composed the scores for the films The Avengers, Iron Man 3, and Thor: The Dark World. He has also composed music for the video games Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and Rock Band. Allen has won numerous awards for his work, including a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2005. On 23 October 1995, he (as a member of Def Leppard) performed a concert in Tangier, Morocco; then later that same day the band performed in London, England; then that night they performed again in Vancouver, Canada. Three concerts on three different continents in 24 hours. That stunt landed Def Leppard in the Guinness Book of World Records. The following day, the band flew to Singapore to begin a tour of Southeast Asia.

1984

On the afternoon of 31 December 1984, Rick was driving with his girlfriend, when he was involved in a serious car accident. His seat belt had severed his left arm at he shoulder, and it was reattached with surgery. Three days later, the arm became infected and doctors had to amputate it. He taught himself to play drums using his right arm and left foot, and returned as a member of Def Leppard to record their 1987 mega-hit, Hysteria. He continues to record and perform with them.
