After college, he moved to New York City and co-founded CollegeHumor with Josh Abramson. The website quickly became a popular destination for college students and young adults. In 2006, Van Veen and Abramson sold CollegeHumor to IAC/InterActiveCorp. Van Veen then served as the CEO of Connected Ventures, a subsidiary of IAC, which included CollegeHumor, BustedTees, and Vimeo. In 2011, Van Veen left Connected Ventures and joined the executive team at IAC. In 2013, he was appointed Head of Global Creative Strategy at Facebook.
