Robert Alan Aurthur was an American screenwriter, playwright, and director. He was born in New York City on June 10, 1922. He attended the University of Michigan and served in the United States Army during World War II. Aurthur began his career as a playwright, writing the Broadway play "The Golden Six" in 1954. He then moved into television, writing for shows such as "The Phil Silvers Show" and "The Defenders". He also wrote for the television movie "The Glass House" in 1972. In the 1970s, Aurthur moved into film, writing the screenplay for the classic film "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" in 1974. He also wrote the screenplay for the 1976 film "Network", which won him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Aurthur continued to write for television and film throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He wrote the screenplay for the film "The Verdict" in 1982, and the television movie "The Burning Bed" in 1984. He also wrote the screenplay for the film "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" in 1984. Aurthur died on April 25, 1978 in Los Angeles, California. He was 55 years old.
