Robert Badinter is a French lawyer, professor, politician, and writer. He was born on March 30, 1928 in Paris, France. He is best known for his work in abolishing the death penalty in France in 1981. Badinter studied law at the University of Paris and was admitted to the Paris Bar in 1954. He was a professor of law at the University of Paris from 1965 to 1981. He was also a member of the French National Assembly from 1978 to 1981. Badinter was appointed Minister of Justice in 1981 and served until 1986. During his tenure, he abolished the death penalty in France. He also introduced a number of reforms to the French legal system, including the introduction of the jury system and the establishment of the Cour de Cassation, the highest court in France. Badinter has written several books on law and politics, including The Abolition of the Death Penalty in France (1985) and The Rights of Man and the Rights of the Citizen (1989). He has also served as a member of the European Parliament from 1989 to 1994. Badinter is currently a professor emeritus at the University of Paris and a member of the French Constitutional Council.
