Robert Gardner (anthropologist) is an American anthropologist, filmmaker, and photographer. He is best known for his documentary films, which often focus on the lives of indigenous peoples. He was born on November 5, 1925 in Brookline, Massachusetts. Gardner attended Harvard University, where he earned a B.A. in English in 1947 and an M.A. in anthropology in 1950. He then went on to pursue a Ph.D. in anthropology at Harvard, which he completed in 1956. Gardner's career as a filmmaker began in 1957, when he was hired by the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard to make a film about the Dani people of New Guinea. This film, Dead Birds, was released in 1964 and won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. Gardner went on to make several other films, including Rivers of Sand (1974), Forest of Bliss (1986), and The Impression of the World (2001). He also wrote several books, including The Impression of the World (2001) and The Impression of the World: A Naturalist's View (2005). Gardner has received numerous awards for his work, including the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1962, the American Anthropological Association's Malinowski Award in 1975, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences' Centennial Medal in 2000.
