Robert Hunter is an American lyricist, singer-songwriter, and poet, best known for his work with the Grateful Dead. He is credited with writing some of the band's most iconic songs, including "Dark Star," "Ripple," "Truckin'," and "Touch of Grey." Hunter has also released several solo albums and collaborated with other musicians, including Bob Dylan, Bruce Hornsby, and Jim Lauderdale. Hunter was born in San Luis Obispo, California, and grew up in Palo Alto. He attended Stanford University, where he studied creative writing and philosophy. After leaving Stanford, Hunter moved to New York City and began writing songs for the Grateful Dead. He wrote the lyrics for the band's first album, The Grateful Dead (1967), and continued to collaborate with them for the next 30 years.
