Robert R. Wark is a Canadian historian and professor emeritus at the University of Alberta. He was born on October 7, 1924 in Edmonton, Alberta. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alberta in 1945 and his Master of Arts degree from the University of Toronto in 1947. He then went on to receive his PhD from the University of Toronto in 1951. Wark is best known for his work on the history of Canada, particularly the history of the Canadian West. He has written numerous books and articles on the subject, including The Canadian West: Its Development and Settlement (1962), The Opening of the Canadian West (1970), and The Canadian West: A History (1975). He has also written extensively on the history of the fur trade and the history of the Métis people. Wark has been a professor at the University of Alberta since 1951 and was appointed professor emeritus in 1991. He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Alberta Order of Excellence in 1992 and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a Member of the Order of Canada.
