Robert Sloman was an English actor, writer, and director. He was best known for his work on the BBC science fiction series Doctor Who, for which he wrote several episodes and directed two. He also wrote for the series The Avengers and The New Avengers. Sloman was born in Oldham, Lancashire, England, on 18 July 1926. He attended the University of Manchester, where he studied English and Drama. After graduating, he worked as a teacher before becoming a professional actor. Sloman began his career in television in the 1950s, appearing in a number of British television series. He wrote his first script for the BBC series The Avengers in 1965, and went on to write for the series The New Avengers. In 1973, Sloman wrote his first script for Doctor Who, the serial "The Green Death". He went on to write several more episodes for the series, including "The Time Monster" and "The Ark in Space". He also directed two Doctor Who serials, "The Time Monster" and "The Ark in Space". Sloman's other writing credits include the BBC series The Brothers, The Onedin Line, and The Professionals. He also wrote the screenplay for the film The Sea Wolves (1980). Sloman died on 28 April 2006, at the age of 79.

1970

In the early 1970s he made a significant contribution to the science fiction programme Doctor Who on the BBC. Together with then producer Barry Letts, he wrote four stories for the Jon Pertwee era on the programme: The Dæmons (credited as Guy Leopold); The Time Monster; The Green Death; and Planet of the Spiders, which was Pertwee's final serial. The Dæmons was cited by Pertwee as his favourite story, while the others contained strong moral messages, especially the focus on pollution and globalisation in The Green Death. When The Green Death was released on DVD in 2004, Sloman contributed a feature on the writing of the story.

Robert Sloman also co-wrote two plays in the West End, both co-written with Laurence Dobie: The Golden Rivet, and The Tinker; the latter was later turned into a film, The Wild and the Willing, in 1962.
