Rodger Smitherman is an American politician who served as a member of the Alabama Senate from 1983 to 1998 and as a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1998 to 2002. He was the first African-American to serve as the President Pro Tempore of the Alabama Senate. Smitherman was born in Montgomery, Alabama, and attended Alabama State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science. He then attended the University of Alabama School of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree. Smitherman was first elected to the Alabama Senate in 1982 and served until 1998. During his tenure in the Senate, he served as the President Pro Tempore from 1995 to 1998. He was then elected to the Alabama House of Representatives in 1998 and served until 2002. Smitherman is currently a partner at the law firm of Smitherman & Associates, LLC, in Birmingham, Alabama. He is also a member of the board of directors of the Birmingham Business Alliance and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Smitherman is married to the former Mary Ann Johnson and has two children. He is 67 years old.
