Rodney Ackland was an English playwright, screenwriter, and director. He was born in Southend, Essex, England, on 18 May 1908. He was educated at the University of London and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Ackland wrote and directed plays for the stage, television, and film. He wrote over 30 plays, including The Old Ladies (1947), After October (1951), and Absolute Hell (1956). He also wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation of The Old Ladies (1953). Ackland was a prolific director, directing over 50 plays and films. He directed the film adaptation of The Old Ladies (1953), as well as the television series The Wednesday Play (1964-1966). Ackland was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 1977 for his services to drama. He died on 17 December, 1991 in London, England.
