Roger Baldwin was an American author, social reformer, and civil liberties advocate. He was the founder of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and served as its executive director from 1920 to 1950. He was also a leader in the pacifist movement and a prominent advocate for the rights of conscientious objectors. Baldwin was born in Wellesley, Massachusetts, on January 21, 1884. He attended Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1906. After graduating, he worked as a social worker in Boston and New York City. In 1912, he joined the staff of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). In 1920, Baldwin founded the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He served as its executive director until 1950, when he retired. During his tenure, the ACLU became one of the most influential civil liberties organizations in the United States. Baldwin was also a leader in the pacifist movement. He was a prominent advocate for the rights of conscientious objectors during World War I and World War II.
