Roger Bannister is best known for being the first person to run a mile in under four minutes. He achieved this feat on May 6, 1954, at the Iffley Road Track in Oxford, England. He ran the mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. Bannister was born in Harrow, London, England, and attended the University of Oxford, where he studied medicine. He was a competitive runner in his youth, and he won the AAA mile championship in 1952. He also competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, where he finished fourth in the 1500-meter race. Bannister retired from competitive running in 1954, and he went on to become a neurologist. He was knighted in 1975 for his services to medicine. He was also the first chairman of the Sports Council, and he served as the president of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education. Bannister died on March 3, 2018, at the age of 88.
