Ron Carter is a Canadian jazz bassist, composer, and educator. He is one of the most recorded bassists in jazz history, appearing on over 2,500 albums. He has been a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, and has performed and recorded with many of jazz's leading musicians, including Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, and McCoy Tyner. Ron Carter was born on March 14, 1958 in Montreal, Canada. He began playing the bass at the age of 12, and by the time he was 15, he was playing professionally. He attended McGill University, where he studied classical music and composition. After graduating, he moved to New York City and began performing with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Miles Davis. Ron Carter has won numerous awards and honors, including a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance in 1983, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2011.
