Ross Taylor was a New Zealand geochemist and professor at the University of Auckland. He was a pioneer in the field of geochemistry and was the first to develop a method for measuring the age of rocks and minerals. He was also the first to develop a method for measuring the composition of the Earth's mantle. Taylor was born in Ashburton, New Zealand, and attended the University of Canterbury, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1947. He then went on to earn a PhD in geochemistry from the University of Cambridge in 1951. Taylor was a professor at the University of Auckland from 1956 to 1991. During his tenure, he developed a method for measuring the age of rocks and minerals, which is now known as the K-Ar dating method. He also developed a method for measuring the composition of the Earth's mantle, which is now known as the Taylor-Hilson method. Taylor was awarded the Royal Society of New Zealand's Hector Medal in 1971 and the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1990. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of London and a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. Taylor died in Auckland on 28 August, 2020, at the age of 96.

Stuart Ross Taylor AC (26 November 1925 – 23 May 2021) was a New Zealand geochemist and planetary scientist known for his studies of the geology of the Moon through lunar samples, the continental crust, tektites and the evolution of the Solar System. He was an emeritus professor and Visiting Fellow at the Australian National University in Canberra. He died in Canberra on 23 May 2021 at the age of 95.
