He is best known for his roles in the television series The Shield, The Unit, and The Walking Dead. He began his career in the early 1990s, appearing in small roles in films such as The Program and The Last Boy Scout. He then went on to appear in a number of television series, including The X-Files, NYPD Blue, and The West Wing. In 2002, he was cast as Detective Curtis Lemansky in the FX series The Shield. He went on to appear in the series for five seasons, earning a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2004. In 2006, he was cast as Sergeant Major Jonas Blane in the CBS series The Unit. He appeared in the series for four seasons, earning a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 2007. In 2010, he was cast as Allen in the AMC series The Walking Dead. He appeared in the series for two seasons, earning a Saturn Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor on Television in 2011. In addition to his acting career, Blackwell has also served as a producer and casting director on a number of films and television series. He is currently producing the upcoming film The Last Outlaw.
