Russell Alexander Alger was an American politician and soldier who served as the 20th Governor of Michigan and as a United States Senator from Michigan. He was the Republican nominee for President of the United States in the 1896 election, losing to William McKinley. Alger was born on February 27, 1836, in Lafayette Township, Medina County, Ohio. He was the son of Russell and Caroline Alger. He attended the public schools and graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1859. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1861. Alger served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, rising to the rank of brigadier general. He was wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg and later served in the Atlanta Campaign. After the war, he served as a member of the Michigan Senate from 1865 to 1867. He was then elected as the 20th Governor of Michigan, serving from 1885 to 1887. In 1896, Alger was the Republican nominee for President of the United States, losing to William McKinley. He then served as a United States Senator from Michigan from 1897 to 1907. He died on January 24, 1907, in Washington, D.C.
