Ry Russo-Young attended the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, where she earned her BFA in Film and Television. She then went on to earn her MFA in Film Directing from Columbia University. Ry Russo-Young has directed several feature films, including Nobody Walks (2012), Before I Fall (2017), and The Sun Is Also a Star (2019). She has also directed several short films, including You Won't Miss Me (2009), which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Russo-Young's next feature as director is The Sun Is Also a Star, adapted from Nicola Yoon’s novel of the same name. The film stars Yara Shahidi, Charles Melton, and John Leguizamo, and was co-produced by MGM and Warner Brothers. The film follows high school student Natasha Kingsely (Shahidi) who falls for Daniel Bae (Melton) the day before she is to be deported. It was released on May 17, 2019.
