Ryan Hargrave is a professional Australian rules footballer who currently plays for the Melbourne Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was drafted by the Melbourne Football Club with the 11th selection in the 2000 AFL Draft. Hargrave made his AFL debut in Round 1 of the 2001 AFL season against the Brisbane Lions. He went on to play a total of 166 games for the Melbourne Football Club, including the 2006 AFL Grand Final. Hargrave is a versatile player who can play in a variety of positions, including the forward line, midfield and defence. He is known for his strong marking ability and is a reliable kick of the football. Hargrave is a two-time Melbourne Football Club best and fairest winner, winning the award in 2004 and 2006. After playing only five games in 2011 due to repeated foot and ankle injuries, it was thought that he would be delisted by the Bulldogs' new coach Brendan McCartney. However, he remained on the list and in 2012 he played eight of the first nine games, reaching his 200-game milestone in round ten.

In 2003, Hargrave was fined $2,000 and suspended for three weeks by the tribunal after he punched Heath Black during a melee against the St Kilda Saints.

He was a defender who was drafted with pick 66 in the 1999 AFL Draft from the Perth Football Club. Throughout 2002 he grew and developed as a defender and became an essential part of the Western Bulldogs' defence. In the same year, Hargrave was nominated for the AFL Rising Star award.
