He was also a noted art critic and collector, and was a major influence on the development of modernist art in Britain. Sitwell was born on 15 November 1897 in Scarborough, Yorkshire, England. He was the eldest son of Sir George Sitwell, 4th Baronet, and his wife, Lady Ida Emily Augusta Denison. He had two siblings, Osbert and Edith. Sitwell was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He served in the British Army during World War I, and was wounded in action in France. After the war, he began writing poetry and criticism, and was a major influence on the development of modernist art in Britain. Sitwell was a prolific writer, publishing over 50 books, including poetry, biographies, and travel writing. He was also a noted art critic and collector, and was a major influence on the development of modernist art in Britain. Sitwell was married twice, first to Lady Dorothy Nevill in 1921, and then to Lady Elizabeth Cavendish in 1945. He had no children. Sitwell died on 3 May 1969 in London, England. He was 71 years old.
