Salome Kapwepwe was a Zambian nationalist and politician who was active in the struggle for independence from British colonial rule. She was the first female cabinet minister in Zambia and the first female vice-president of the United Nations General Assembly. Kapwepwe was born in Chinsali, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) on 8 August 1926. She was educated at the Chinsali Girls School and the University of London. She was a teacher before entering politics. Kapwepwe was a founding member of the United National Independence Party (UNIP) in 1959 and was elected to the Legislative Council in 1962. She was appointed Minister of Education, Social Welfare and Community Development in 1964, becoming the first female cabinet minister in Zambia. Kapwepwe was elected to the National Assembly in 1968 and was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1972. She was appointed Vice-President of the United Nations General Assembly in 1975, becoming the first female vice-president of the General Assembly. Kapwepwe was a strong advocate for women's rights and was a founding member of the Zambia National Women's Lobby. She was also a founding member of the African Women's League and the African Women's Research and Documentation Centre. Kapwepwe died on 15 April 2021 at the age of 94. She was survived by her husband, two sons, and two daughters.
