He has also appeared in films such as The Killing Fields, The Great Gatsby, and The Killing of a Chinese Bookie. Waterston was born on November 15, 1940 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He attended Harvard University, where he studied English and American literature. After graduating, he moved to New York City to pursue an acting career. Waterston has been married twice. His first marriage was to Lynn Louisa Woodruff, with whom he had two children. His second marriage was to Lynn Louisa Woodruff's sister, Katherine, with whom he had two more children.
