Samuel Fuller was an American film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and began his career as a crime reporter for the New York Evening Graphic. He wrote several novels and short stories before turning to film, and his first feature film, I Shot Jesse James, was released in 1949. Fuller's career spanned more than four decades, and he directed over 30 feature films, including Pickup on South Street (1953), Shock Corridor (1963), The Naked Kiss (1964), and The Big Red One (1980). He was known for his bold, often controversial, and often violent films, and his use of non-linear storytelling. Fuller was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for The Big Red One, and he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1985. He died in 1997 at the age of 85.
