Sandra Dee was born on April 23, 1942 in Bayonne, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Mary and John Cymboliak, a truck driver. She began her career as a child model and appeared in several television commercials. She made her film debut in 1957 in Until They Sail.
In 1959, she starred in the romantic comedy Gidget, which made her a teen idol. She went on to star in several other films, including A Summer Place (1959), Imitation of Life (1959), and Come September (1961).
In 1965, she married singer Bobby Darin and the couple had one son, Dodd. The couple divorced in 1967.
Sandra Dee was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film The Dunwich Horror (1970). She also appeared in the television series The Love Boat (1977-1987).
Sandra Dee died on February 20, 2005, at the age of 62, from complications of kidney disease. She was posthumously inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006.

Sandra Dee passed away on February 20, 2005, two months away from what would have been her 63rd birthday on April 23.
She received renewed attention after the release of the movie Beyond the Sea (2004), the biopic about her late husband Bobby Darin that recalled and detailed their stormy, headline marriage. Despite its painful aspects, she reportedly approved of the project and gave it her blessing.

Her son, Dodd Mitchell, penned a book about his parents, Dream Lovers: The Magnificent Shattered Lives of Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee, in 1994. In the book, he chronicled his mother's anorexia, and her drug and alcohol problems.
In 1991, a frail Sandra Dee, then 49, did what would prove to be her last interview with Sally Jesse Raphael. Some considered it exploitative and confessional. At the end of the show there were surprise reunions with James Darren and John Saxon, whom Dee was to appear with in a stage play. Also appearing was Shelley Fabares, who was a fan of Dee's. The appearance did not lead to a hoped-for comeback.
