Scott Backes is an American mountaineer and alpinist who was born in 1957. He is best known for his first ascents of some of the world's most challenging mountains, including Mount McKinley, Mount Rainier, and Mount Everest. He has also climbed the highest peaks in all seven continents. Backes began climbing in the early 1970s and has since become one of the most accomplished mountaineers in the world. He has completed more than 100 first ascents, including the first ascent of the North Face of Mount McKinley in Alaska in 1981. He has also completed the first ascent of the West Face of Mount Rainier in Washington in 1983. Backes has also climbed Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, twice. He first summited the mountain in 1988 and then again in 1996. He is also the first American to summit the mountain without the use of supplemental oxygen. Backes has been honored with numerous awards for his mountaineering achievements, including the American Alpine Club's David Sowles Award in 1988 and the National Geographic Society's Adventurer of the Year Award in 1996.
