Seamus Mallon is a former Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland and a former leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP). He was born in Markethill, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, and was educated at St. Patrick's Grammar School in Armagh. He studied law at Queen's University Belfast and was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1962. Mallon was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly in 1973 and served as a Member of Parliament for Mid-Ulster from 1983 to 2005. He was appointed Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland in 1998 and served until 2001. He was also a member of the Northern Ireland Executive from 1998 to 2002. Mallon was awarded an honorary doctorate from Queen's University Belfast in 2001 and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2005. He was also awarded the Freedom of the City of Belfast in 2006. Mallon is currently a member of the House of Lords and is a patron of the charity Co-operation Ireland. He is also a member of the International Commission on Missing Persons.
