Shamshad Begum was an Indian singer who was born in Lahore, Pakistan on April 14, 1919. She was one of the first playback singers in the Hindi film industry. She sang in over 600 films in her career spanning from the 1940s to the 1960s. She was known for her versatility and range, and was able to sing in many different languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, and Urdu. Shamshad Begum was a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, in 2009. She was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006. Shamshad Begum passed away on April 23, 2013, at the age of 94. She is remembered as one of the most influential singers of her time.
