Shannon Lucid is an American biochemist and a retired NASA astronaut. She holds the record for the longest duration stay in space by an American and by a woman, having spent 188 days in space on the Russian space station Mir in 1996. She has flown on five space shuttle missions and has logged over 223 days in space. Lucid was born in Shanghai, China, to American parents. She earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Oklahoma in 1965 and a master's degree in biochemistry from the University of Oklahoma in 1967. She then earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1973. Lucid was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978 and became an astronaut in August 1979. She flew on five space shuttle missions, including STS-51G in 1985, STS-34 in 1989, STS-43 in 1991, STS-58 in 1993, and STS-76 in 1996. She also served as a mission specialist on the Russian space station Mir from March to September 1996. Lucid retired from NASA in December 2012. She is currently a professor of biochemistry at the University of Oklahoma. She is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the International Academy of Astronautics.
