Sharon Decker is an American businesswoman and former Secretary of Commerce for the state of North Carolina. She was born on 1957 in Stanly County, NC. Decker attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. She then went on to earn a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of South Carolina. Decker began her career in public service in 1982, when she was appointed as the Stanly County Manager. She then served as the Deputy Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Commerce from 1989 to 1993. In 1993, she was appointed as the Secretary of Commerce for the state of North Carolina, a position she held until 2001. In 2001, Decker left public service to become the President and CEO of the North Carolina Technology Association. She held this position until 2011, when she was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer of the North Carolina Department of Commerce. Decker is currently the President and CEO of the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. She is also a member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Chamber of Commerce and the North Carolina Economic Development Board.
