LaFraniere graduated from the University of Michigan in 1977 with a degree in English. She began her career as a reporter for The Associated Press in Detroit, and later moved to Washington, D.C. to work for The Washington Post. In 1989, she joined The New York Times, where she worked as a reporter and editor for more than two decades. LaFraniere has won numerous awards for her work, including the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 2009 for her coverage of the 2008 presidential election in Afghanistan. She has also won the George Polk Award, the Overseas Press Club Award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.
