Sheo Sharan Verma was born into a family of farmers. He was educated at the University of Allahabad and the University of Lucknow. He began his political career in the 1950s, when he was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He served as a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government from 1967 to 1977. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1977 and served as a minister in the Union government from 1977 to 1979. Verma was a member of the Indian National Congress and served as the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee from 1980 to 1984. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1984 to 1990. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1991 for his contribution to public service. Verma is a noted philanthropist and has established several educational institutions in his home state of Uttar Pradesh. He is also the founder of the Sheo Sharan Verma Foundation, which works to promote education and health in rural areas.
